White House Reassures Pro Abortion Organizations Of Sotomayor’s Support for Abortion Rights June 1, 2009 White House press secretary Robert Gibbs on Thursday, found it necessary to reassure abortion-rights groups that Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor and President Obama hold the same views on abortion rights. On Wednesday, several pro-abortion organizations held a press conference, indicating their support for Sotamayor, but questioning her background on the abortion issue and seeking reassurances of her support. Sotomoyor has not dealt with constitutional issues regarding abortion rights in the nearly 2 decades she has been a federal judge. Her most notable decision regarding abortion was in 2002 when she ruled that the Bush administration had every right to implement a ban on federal funding for international family planning. Several abortion-rights advocacy groups have said they will wait to take a stand on the nomination until they learn more about Sotomayor's views on the right privacy and abortion rights. There also seems to be growing concern from pro-life groups over Sotomayor’s view that the bench is “a place for making policy”
